Get a Hobby!

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

In other words, get a hobby or risk becoming a psychotic lunatic with a meat cleaver.

Perhaps I exaggerate, but Jack Nicholson's "shining" example does remind us how important it is to balance work with play, to identify our passions and interests and make the time to pursue them.

Enter Get a Hobby! by Tina Barseghian, a new book boasting 101 All-Consuming Diversions for Any Lifestyle.

Barseghian, a contributing editor at ReadyMade magazine, whets the appetite with summary descriptions of hobbies for every pleasure - from beading to falconry to whittling to mushroom hunting.

Curious about beer brewing or olive oil infusions? Dare to try your hand at soap making or furniture restoration?

You'll find plenty of ideas in this easy-to-read soft-cover book, complete with an overview and history of each hobby and everything you'll need to get started.

Maybe today's the day to grab the kids and go fossil hunting? Why not build a compost pile? How about making homemade preserves (mmmmmmm!) or creating some fascinating gourd crafts?

Whatever you do, just do something. Build an ant farm. Try ham radio. Sculpt some ice.

Summertime's right around the corner, people, and those long hot days can indeed be deadly when you've got whining little ragamuffins complaining about how bored they are. It might serve you well to check out this book.

Then again, you can always watch a few good movies...

You know, I think there's something to that. If I wasn't able to get my hands on something (knitting, quilting, beading, etc), they'd prolly end up around someone's throat! LOL
